Promoting Safer Maritime Operation with the Near-misses Detection Platform and GPS Calibration Services

Near-miss cases are situations involving close contacts between vessels that could have led to an accident or injury. Such monitoring discipline is critical for Singapore’s busy port waters with over 1,000 vessels operating at any one time. A*STAR developed a near-miss case management dashboard to automatically detect near-miss incidents leveraging marine traffic data, which allows operators to review and analyse past incidents statistically based on parameters like locations, vessel types and dates of incidents.

In addition, another team is providing remote precision timing and remote calibration services, which can correct potential drifts in GNSS receiver clocks, aligning them with Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). These are important safety practices provide accurate positioning data vital for safe navigation. Remote calibration ensures that GPS systems perform with high precision timing accuracies without requiring physical intervention. Calibrated GPS systems also play a crucial role in distress situations, as they relay locations with better accuracy, aiding rescue teams, expediting response times, and potentially saving lives.
